Production Design to Sam
To me, production design is a means to sweep the audience off their feet and through an adventure. I remember the thrill of watching my first theatre performance, Peter Pan, and the rush of excitement I felt.
I really love the process of getting into the world of a script and then diving into an exploratory research phase of what that would look like through the eyes of a character. I am fascinated by how different spaces can evoke varying emotions amongst people. I like to ask:
“Why here? What does this space mean to the characters? What is everyone's emotional state? What brought them here and why do they want to stay or leave?”

Through the combination of research and questions I begin building a picture of the spaces that satisfies the visual journey of the story. I began my design education in undergrad specializing in theatre set design, so I like to ground my designs using emotional keywords. For example, “looming pressure” in my 480 Seconds project or “fresh and energizing” in the Sisu Energy Boost commercial. As a result, many of my design decisions are motivated through the project’s emotional needs.

My design journey began on a theatre production of Peter Pan in ninth grade, which lead me to pursue my undergraduate degree in theatre design and production in Vancouver, Canada. In my final year of undergrad I discovered my love for the fast pace world of film. I worked simultaneously as a production designer in the indie world and as an art department assistant/coordinator in the union world for several years before taking a leap of faith and returning to school. I am now pursuing my passion at the American Film Institute with my sights set on a career as a Production Designer. I hope that audiences that watch my projects get to experience the thrill of going on an exciting adventure similar to what I once felt while watching Peter Pan.
